Thiara is a Ranger-Sorceror-Geomancer. Rangers in Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 have the option of either chosing to pick swords or bows as their primary weaponry. Since the party had been given a heavily magical Sword in the second session of the game, Thiara specialized in using more than one sword at once. As she progressed in picking up Sorceric, and eventually Geomancer levels, her appearance began to change - she developed fur, grew flowers in her hair (they are part of her) and exchanged her brown human eyes for green cat eyes. Because she was a Sorceror, she had the chance of Arcane Spell Failure if she wore heavy armor.

What this meant in the practical terms of finding a lead miniature for the character was:

  1. It had to be a female miniature, or at least one that could be converted from male to female without being dreadfully obvious about it.
  2. It had to have two swords.
  3. Ideally, it had flowers in its hair.
  4. Ideally, it would be wearing studded-leather armor, or less ideally, leather. Plate and chainmail were right out.
This was a nigh-impossible task. Most companies that produce female minis do the standard chainmail-bikini thing with a Really Big Sword (tm) and not much else. And most of the older companies that didn't do that sort of foolishness had bangs, because they struck their minis in the 80s. Fortunately, I had an old Ral Partha miniature that lacked the leather armor, but otherwise matched the initial character pretty well. Unfortunately, as the other miniatures were painted, I realized the Ral Partha was on the 20 mm scale, and all the other minis were on the 25 mm scale. Thiara is not that much shorter than the party. Also, the old miniature didn't have flowers in its hair, or even the option of pretending, as it had a bandanna tied tightly over its hair.

Eventually, I found the Deladrin Assasin figure from Reaper Miniatures - except it was still a Green, which meant it hadn't been produced yet. I waited grumpily for it to come out, and bought it as soon as I found it had been cast. The figure has two swords, studded leather armor, and a long flowing cloak that suited Thiara's sneaky personality very well. The only two things that it lacked were a bare right arm (Thiara's right arm is heavily tattooed) and flowers in its hair. I felt I could deal with that.

Thiara is wearing magical wyvern-skin studded-leather armor, which is why the leather is green, with studs of high quality steel. She has the sword made by the Demigod Semtek for killing Dark Alar in her right hand (although she is left-handed, with a sword she is in fact ambidexterous) and a flaming dagger that was a gift from the Orks in her left. Her hair is green (it was the closest I could come to flowers) as are her eyes. The cloak is one of the camoflauge cloaks that the party were given by the Elven Queen when they went to face Fingul, and the cloak brooch is a gift from Karis to help her fight more effectively against magical constructs.

Che, Thiara's familiar, posed a different problem. There are no winged snakes produced by any miniature company that I know of. Reaper has more recently produced a normal cobra miniature, but at the time Che joined the party, they hadn't done that yet. So I made the figure myself.

Che is made from Greenstuff, the sculpting putty that is used to create the Greens from which the lead miniatures are cast. Once he was made, I glued him to a penny for a base (at the time, I didn't have any plastic bases), primed him and painted him as if he were a normal miniature. The other players were very impressed with the final result, even if they did tease me that he looked a bit like a cactus plant while unpainted.
